ASSIGNMENT: Art Blog
When is it due?
Blog entries must be posted by Midnight March 29th
Blog replies are due Midnight Monday April 5th.
What is it?
A collaborative blog that everyone contributes to by posting a 500-word blog entry (about three double-spaced pages) include 1 image, AND leaving at least 3 comments on the entries posted by your classmates.
The purpose of the Chicago trip is to give you a chance to reflect on some of the topics addressed in class – for example, seeing installation art is much different than seeing images of it on the projector. It is also a good way to consider and critique the way other artists present their work to the public, whether it is a video artist, graphic designer or a conceptual artist. We can also consider the institutions involved in presenting art to the public first-hand (for example, how do galleries present art versus museums?). Finally, the purpose of the Chicago trip is to get to know your peers and build community amongst yourselves. Oh, and also to have some fun….but not too much.
What to blog about:
There should be three components to your blog entry:
1. Research/basic biographical info.
Very basic please – no need to use up 200 words listing every award an artist has received; include info that may be relevant to understanding the artist’s work. Include past work the artist has made (images too if you can find them), especially if it was similar to what you saw or part of a larger series, etc.
2. Overview of what you saw. Where did you see it?
Was it included in a larger group exhibition? What did it look like (use images if possible!)What is made out of? How big is it? Think about physical and visual structures here.
3. Opinion/analysis.
Try to explain what the artist(s) intended when making or producing the work. If you can find an artistic statement, copy it and use it to help you explain. These are the social structures. Note: most museums and galleries will have bios or artist statements available – DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK!
Did you like it? Why or why not? “It was ugly” is not enough!
Comments: Respond to at least three of your classmate’s posts. Be thoughtful and constructive. “I loved Blue Man Group too – it was awesome” is not enough!
